Welcome to the East Village

WELCOME TO THE EAST VILLAGE

While deciding on a neighborhood to research for our semester project, I figured I would look into the history and demographics of the one I currently live in today. For the past two years I have lived in the East Village of Manhattan. Before I discuss what makes this neighborhood so unique and special I will introduce its location and create an image in your minds for its surroundings. The East Village is a neighborhood located on the east side of lower Manhattan. The Village's boundaries are defined as the region east of the Bowery and Third Avenue between 14th street and Houston street. From East to West its boundaries are from the East River to Third Avenue and from 14th street to Houston, North to South. This popping and hip neighborhood contains three different subsections each with their own unique evolving style and vibe including: The Bowery, Alphabet City and Little Ukraine.

The first of the three subsections located in the East Village, The Bowery, is a street and neighborhood in the southern region of Manhattan. The Bowery is bounded by Chatham Square, Worth Street, and Mott Street. The Bowery overlaps with Little Australia, to the south is Chinatown and to the west are Little Italy and NoHo. The word "Bowery" is an anglicization of the Dutch bouwerie, derived from an antiquated Dutch word for "farm" referring to its history in the 17th century when the region contained many large farms. The Second subsection, Little Ukraine, is bounded by Houston Street and 14th Street, and Third Avenue and Avenue A. Lastly, Alphabet City, the eastern section of East Village contains avenues with single-lettered names giving it its name. It is bordered by Houston Street to the south and 14th Street to the north. Notable places within Alphabet City include Tompkins Square Park and St. Marks Place.
