East Village: Who Lives There Now?




    As I walk the streets of the East Village everyday I pass people of different races and backgrounds each with a story of their own. The Village as I like to call is a place of diversity and community. Based on the 2010 United States Census, the population of East Village was 44,136, a change of 2,390 from the 41,746 counted in 2000. The neighborhood had a population density of 176.5 inhabitants per acre and the racial makeup of the neighborhood was 65.5% White, 3.9% African American, 0.1% Native American, 14.9% Asian, 0% Pacific Islander, from other races, and 2.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 12.4% of the population. According to niche.com the population is 70,364 including 51% white, 22% hispanic, 15% Asian, 9% African American, and  2% two or more races. Most inhabitants are adults: a bulk of them are between 25–44, while 25% are between 45–64, and 16% are 65 or older. The diverse age group as well as race and ethnicity adds to the unique cultural atmosphere and community.
